The Best Kept Secret

The Great North Woods Region of New Hampshire is a surprise to most and it proves to many that New Hampshire does in fact have a little bit of something for everyone. In particular, "the woods" gives us an appreciation for what it must have been back in the time when the first French trapper came down from Canada in his sturdy canoe looking for beaver and adventure. From the beauty of Whitefield to the quaint community of Lancaster to the super friendly town of Colebrook to the Sportsman's Lodge on Big Diamond Pond in Stewartstown and south to the hustle bustle of Berlin, there are a wide variety of lifestyles to choose from. The Great North Woods offer some of the lowest real estate prices in the state. There are many opportunities for owning your own business, while having fishing and hunting, camping, boating, wildlife watching and snowmobiling all close at hand. A Day in the life of a Commercial Broker:

On September 11, 2003, Public Service of New Hampshire sponsored a bus trip to the Great North Woods, which included passengers comprised of top officials of the aggressive state economic group and a cross section of commercial real estate brokers from the lower part of the state. At the end of the day, one commercial broker remarked, "this was a very enlightening day." The purpose of the trip was to expose these professionals to communities that want industry and new businesses, the availability of a skilled work force and the existence of reasonable housing costs. One broker commented, "Occassionally I meet prospects that would be perfect for this location, now I will be better prepared to knowledgeably promote the region." He later listed four selling points:

property costs are extremely low ($2.00 and $3.00 a square foot was shown in one community and in another town, apartment rentals for two and three units began at $350 a month),
the communities are pro business (officials from each community met the bus and rode into town explaining the community benefits, one town even supplied a police escort),
the natural beauty and lifestyle appeals to many entrepreneurs (it is not too hard envisioning a family growing up, surrounded by nature's best, certainly a long way from crowded streets and wailing sirens), and
the availability and cost of housing (in the southern portion of the state, the absence of housing and/or the high rents are making the area difficult to attract new employees).
