The Interstate

From the beginning of the mid-eighties, The Merrimack Valley Region has been in the center of the nation's focus on New Hampshire as a place to live. In 1987, Money Magazine made it official by recognizing Nashua as the best place in the United States to live, and they did it again in 1997. Many have asked why, but if you study the over-developed towns of Massachusetts, which this region boarders, it becomes quite plain that people who lived "down there" would want to live "up here" once a means of commuting was complete. New Hampshire offered a way of life that was so much simpler, and when Route 3, which connects to Interstate 495 (I-495) and Interstate 95 (I-95), both beltways around Boston, and Interstate 93 (I-93) were completed, the rush was on. Nashua is the major New Hampshire town off Route 3, so it automatically became the first town to experience this migration. However, once the word was out on how comfortable living in NH was, and I-93 was complete, towns along the I-93 corridor became equally as desirable, and towns like Bedford, Manchester and Concord began to grow.

With the completion of the four-lane expansion of Route 101, which links I-93 to I-95, an east-west highway, The Merrimack Valley Region has grown even more in importance. In the past, with the old two-lane Route 101, many people living is the Seacoast Region commuted to Massachusetts because of the job opportunities and the commuting time. But, the expanded Route 101 offered an efficient commuting path, and it was not long before more companies decided to move into the region and to take advantage of this labor resource.

Traditionally, New Hampshire has relied on real estate taxes to pay for its schools. There is no personal income tax or sales tax, so the real estate taxes have always been relatively high. However, if a person lives in the state, and makes his/her living in the state, New Hampshire has the lowest over-all tax burden in the country. Businesses knew that if they moved to New Hampshire, there was a huge labor resource of workers who did not enjoy getting up every morning and driving south -- where they had to pay an income tax to Massachusetts, even though New Hampshire had none. The modern highway system brought employee and employer together, allowing many to stop commuting -- and get a raise at the same time. After all, if an employee doesn't have to pay on income tax, and doesn't have to pay for fuel and wear and tear on their car, why would they want to commute when a similar position exists just down the road? I-95, I-93 and Route 101 made this decision easier. In a sense, we now see a reverse-direction commute, since many of the business that have moved to New Hampshire now have employees driving north, which begs the questions of how long it will take these employees to sell their Massachusetts home and purchase one in New Hampshire.
